HC Deb 17 February 1937 vol 320 c1170
30. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the amount for which Imperial funds are responsible for the negotiation and arrangement of the construction of the bridge over the River Zambesi; and what contribution is being made by the Portuguese Government to the same?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

The construction of the Zambesi Bridge has been financed solely from loans raised by the Government of Nyasaland, which are guaranteed by the Imperial Government under the authority of the East Africa and Palestine Guaranteed Loans Act, 1926.

Mr. Day

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what was the total amount?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

I am not sure whether the hon. Member is referring to the amount of the whole loan or only the amount in respect of the Zambesi Bridge. I think the Zambesi Bridge cost approximately £2,000,000.
