HC Deb 11 February 1937 vol 320 c563
22. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Home Secretary the number of persons arrested in 1936 who were granted compensation or recompense for wrongful arrest or acquittal?

Mr. Lloyd

I can only give information as to cases in which the Metropolitan Police were concerned. So far as can be ascertained, there were 13 such cases during 1936.

Mr. Sorensen

Does that mean that in certain cases compensation has been granted; and is there any principle on which the hon. Gentleman and his Department proceed in granting compensation in such cases?

Mr. Lloyd

Yes, Sir, it was compensation. There are occasions on which, when a wrongful arrest takes place—for example, in regard to such offences as loitering with intent to commit a felony—and the case is not proceeded with, compensation ex gratia may be given.

Mr. Sorensen

Can the hon. Gentleman say, as regards the figure he has given, in how many cases compensation was given and in how many it was not?

Mr. Lloyd

No, Sir.

Mr. Sorensen

Can the hon. Gentleman get the figures?

Mr. Lloyd

I will inquire.
