HC Deb 11 February 1937 vol 320 cc577-8
49. Mr. E. J. Williams

asked the Lord President of the Council what is the estimated cost of erecting the stands on the Coronation route?

The Lord President of the Council (Mr. Ramsay MacDonald)

I am informed by my Noble Friend the First Commissioner of Works that the total estimated cost of erecting the stands on sites on the Coronation route under the control of the Office of Works is approximately £140,000.

50. Mr. Morgan

asked the Lord President of the Council what will be the capacity of the Coronation procession stands being erected on ground belonging to the Palace of Westminster; and whether seats will be provided free on these stands for guests of Members of Parliament and the staff of both Houses of Parliament?

Mr. MacDonald

There are 4,393 seats in the stands being erected to view the Coronation procession on ground belonging to the Palace of Westminster. As regards the price and allocation of these seats, I regret that I am not as yet able to add anything to the reply I gave on 28th January to the hon. and gallant Member for Salford, South (Major Stourton) and to the hon. Member for Dorset, East (Mr. Hall-Caine). The whole matter is under very active consideration.

Mr. Day

Is that number of seats included in the answer which the right hon. Gentleman gave to me last week as to 75,000 seats?

Mr. MacDonald

The number is 85,000.

Mr. Day

Will the right hon. Gentleman look at the OFFICIAL REPORT, where he will see a discrepancy between himself and the Office of Works as to the number of seats that will be available?
