HC Deb 09 February 1937 vol 320 cc202-3
24. Mr. Davidson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether the question of "Red Biddy" drinking in Scotland is still under careful review; and whether he has anything further to report on this question?

Mr. Elliot

As already stated, the matter is under careful review, and I am unable to add to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member last Tuesday.

Mr. Davidson

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman, because of his previous reply to me, to have analysed a half bottle of red wine that I have here; whether he is aware that I obtained this red wine in a public house in Glasgow, that those who obtained it have assured me that it is really very bad, mentally and morally, for the people who take it, and whether he will have this 7d. bottle of concoction investigated or analysed for the benefit of the people?

Mr. Elliot

I will do my best to have analysed any samples of food or drink presented to me by any Member, but I am afraid that there is no analyst's department attached to the Scottish Office, and I shall have to get facilities from some of the great cities of Scotland.
