HC Deb 08 February 1937 vol 320 cc35-6
66. Commander Bower

asked the Postmaster-General, whether, having regard to the fact that articles of political tendency appear in the publications of the British Broadcasting Corporation, he will state what steps are taken to ensure that all shades of political opinion are equally presented?

Major Tryon

I am informed by the Corporation that it is careful to exclude from its publications any matter involving political opinion, apart from the reproduction of broadcast talks and discussions; and that in reprinting such broadcasts, the same care is taken as in the broadcasts themselves to present a fair balance of opinion.

Commander Bower

Would it not be better that, in view of the many complaints which have been received, articles should not be published over the signatures of people having very definite Left-wing convictions?

Mr. Alexander

Would it not be better to meet the hon. and gallant Member's point by allowing him to have a free censorship on behalf of the Conservative party?

Commander Bower

Certainly; I should like it.
