HC Deb 04 February 1937 vol 319 c1756
31. Mr. John

asked the Home Secretary whether he has seen the report of the case of Mr. John Herbert, Troedyrhiw, Bwlchyllan, Cardiganshire, who was fined £1 by Mr. Justice Lawrence at the Cardiganshire Assizes, held at Lam-peter, on 25th January, because he did not respond to his name when the jurors list was called on 23rd January; whether, as Mr. Herbert's absence was due entirely to misunderstanding and ignorance, he will take steps to ascertain whether the misunderstanding could have been avoided if the communication had been made in Welsh; and whether, if that proves to have been the case, he will remit the fine?

Sir J. Simon

I have no information as to this case, and the matter is not one in which I have any jurisdiction. Provision is made in Section 12 of the Juries Act, 1862, whereby a fine imposed on a juror for non-attendance may be remitted on application being made in proper form to the court by which the fine was imposed.
