HC Deb 21 December 1937 vol 330 cc1766-7
34. Mr. Benjamin Smith

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the recent loss of the steamship "Anagher" off Groomsport, County Down; whether he is aware that this vessel, carrying a cargo of scrap-iron, is reported by the only surviving member of her crew to have been heeling over prior to her foundering; and whether, in view of the fact that at the subsequent inquest on the nine members of the crew who lost their lives, the verdict was returned that there was no satisfactory evidence to show that loading was satisfactorily supervised, nor as to the seaworthiness of the vessel, he will have immediate inquiry made into the circumstances attending the disaster?

Mr. Stanley

I have learned with regret of the loss of the steamship "Anagher," and I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my sympathy with the relatives of the officers and men who lost their lives. I am making a full inquiry into the disaster.

Mr. Smith

Will that inquiry be public?

Mr. Stanley

At the present moment a preliminary inquiry is being carried out. After that, it will be decided what form the further inquiry will take.

Mr. Smith

Will the right hon. Gentleman take note of the fact that the jury made some specific remarks with regard to the loading of the vessel in an unsatisfactory manner and the unseaworthiness of the vessel?

Mr. Stanley

I will bear that in mind.
