HC Deb 21 December 1937 vol 330 cc1772-3
51. Mr. R. C. Morrison

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that Bruce Castle Museum, Tottenham, contains extensive postal collections of national importance used by persons from all over the country, and whether he will consider making a grant to this museum?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

I am aware that the Union of Post Office Workers maintains a postal collection in the Bruce Castle Museum. No question has been raised of a grant from public funds to this Museum, and I cannot agree that such a grant would be justified.

Mr. Morrison

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that £1,500,000 is paid by the Government to museums; and why should all this money go to National Museums when a local museum, as in this case, is maintaining a national collection?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

There are valuable collections of a variety of interesting articles in local museums in all parts of the country, but it would not be practicable to afford grants from Government funds to all of them.
