HC Deb 16 December 1937 vol 330 cc1315-6
24. Mr. Thorne

asked the Home Secretary whether he can give any information about a lift accident at St. John Street, E.C., on Thursday; whether the lift was defective; and what was the cause of the accident?

Sir S. Hoare

The cause of this accident appears to have been that the man's shoe was projecting beyond the edge of the platform on which he was ascending, and caught against the inside wall of the hoist well. The well was free from projections, and the clearance between the platform and the wall was about 1½ inches, which I am advised is not abnormal in the type of hoist in question. His shoe was torn off and he got out on to the landing where others came to his assistance. I understand that he was sent home after treatment in hospital.
