HC Deb 16 December 1937 vol 330 cc1342-3
Mr. Attlee

May I ask the Prime Minister what will be the business next week?

The Prime Minister

Monday: Coal Bill, Committee stage.

Tuesday: The Adjournment of the House will be moved for a Debate on Foreign Affairs. On the conclusion of this Debate, at about 9 o'clock, the remaining stages of the Unemployment Insurance Bill will be taken.

Wednesday: Consideration of Private Members' Motions.

Thursday: The House will meet at 11 o'clock. Motion for the Adjournment of the House for the Christmas Recess.

The Adjournment Motion will contain the usual provisions to empower Mr. Speaker, on representations being made by the Government, to call the House together at an earlier date if such a course should appear necessary in the public interest.

The House will reassemble on Tuesday, 1st February next. The Business to be taken on that day, and during the remainder of the week, will be announced later.

Mr. Maxton

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider adding to the Adjournment Motion some provision by which the House could be called together on representations from the House, for instance, by so many Members of the House, with the Leader of the Opposition, and not merely on representations from the Government?

The Prime Minister

It could be added if the House so wished, but the matter has been considered before, and the House has decided against it.
