HC Deb 13 December 1937 vol 330 c813
57. Mr. Kelly

asked the Home Secretary what was the period of service of Chief-Inspector Barker, recently retired from the Metropolitan Police; and whether any offer was made to him to continue in his position for a further period of years?

Mr. Lloyd

Chief-Inspector Barker will retire from the force early next month, when he will become entitled to the maximum pension for his rank. I am informed by the Commissioner of Police that no offer of the kind referred to was made to him.

Mr. Kelly

Is it now the policy of the Government not to offer any inducement to these young officers to remain in the Service?

Mr. Lloyd

The policy was laid down by Parliament some years ago, and is now being carried out.
