HC Deb 29 April 1937 vol 323 c505
7. Mr. David Grenfell

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will consider a scheme for training unemployed men in the South Wales Special Area in order that they may be fitted for work in the new industries which are to be established on the Treforest training estate?

Mr. E. Brown

A site for a training centre is being obtained on the Treforest estate. Another centre will shortly be opened at Oakdale, near Newport, Mon. At these centres, in addition to medical, dental and optical treatment, local men will receive preliminary training which should enable them to re-enter employment either locally or in other parts of the country. I anticipate that the training at these centres, which is designed to impart in a period of three months a factory sense and some knowledge of factory methods, will prove of real value to new industries being established in the district.

Mr. Grenfell

How many unemployed men are there to be catered for in the immediate future, say in the next six months?

Mr. Brown

I would like notice of that question.
