HC Deb 28 April 1937 vol 323 cc326-7
38. Mr. West Russell

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can make any statement with regard to the gift by the Straits Settlements to His Majesty's Government towards the cost of Empire defence?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

The Governor has reported to me that on 26th April the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements unanimously adopted a motion for a gift of five hundred thousand dollars (approximately £58,000) as a contribution to His Majesty's Government towards the cost of Empire defence. I am glad to have this opportunity of expressing the Government's appreciation of this further generous gift from the Colony, and of the spirit of co-operation of which it is still another practical example.
