HC Deb 21 April 1937 vol 322 cc1731-2
22. Mr. Lunn

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can make any statement on the committee which is to investigate the incidence of royalties on the mining industry in Kenya; and whether its terms of reference cover the question of methods for returning to the natives of Kenya a proper proportion of the wealth accruing from the mines?

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

I have seen a report in the Press that the Acting-Governor intended to appoint a committee to investigate mining royalties in Kenya, but I have no information as to the composition of the committee or its terms of reference.

Mr. Lunn

If such a committee is set up, which, I believe, is likely, will the right hon. Gentleman see that native interests are safeguarded?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

Obviously native interests are bound to be discused in any committee dealing with mining in Kenya.
