HC Deb 21 April 1937 vol 322 c1721
1. Mr. Mander

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the new League of Nations High Commissioner in Danzig is receiving full facilities for carrying out the duties allocated to him by the League Council; whether, in particular, full and unimpeded contact is permitted between him and the Danzig population; and whether there is any interference with his telephone calls and postal correspondence?

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Eden)

As I have previously explained the only person who is in a position to report on the matters referred to by the hon. Member is the High Commissioner himself and the High Commissioner makes his reports to the Council, and not to any member of it or to myself as rapporteur. I have made inquiries at Geneva, and I understand that no such report to the Council has been received.

Mr. Mander

Did not the right hon. Gentleman undertake a fortnight ago to make inquiries on this subject, and will he not carry out that obligation?

Mr. Eden

Yes, I gave that undertaking, and I have made inquiries at Geneva, and that is the answer I have received.

Mr. Mander

Then the right hon. Gentleman is not able to give any assurance that the High Commissioner is being treated any better than Mr. Lister?

Mr. Eden

I cannot take upon myself responsibility which properly belongs to the Council.
