HC Deb 20 April 1937 vol 322 c1594
44. Mr. Hardie (for Mr. Leonard)

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that owing to the recent heavy rise in the wholesale price of potatoes the retail price in some districts has risen to 2d. per lb. for the best variety; and whether he proposes to take any action to assist the consumer?

Dr. Burgin

My right hon. Friend is aware that potato prices have risen during the past few weeks, and with the concurrence of the Agricultural Departments, he has authorised an increase in the quantity of maincrop potatoes that may be imported during April. I should, however, add that in recent months importers have not been able to fill the quotas allotted.

Mr. Hardie

Is that a reason for increasing the price?

Mr. Holdsworth

Would it not be as well to release the restriction on the acreage of potatoes which can be grown in this country?

Mr. Hardie

Cannot I have an answer to the question I put? Is that any reason for raising the price?
