asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of firms to whom approval was given to work the two-shift system during 1936 and the first three months of 1937?

Authority to work the two-shift system was granted to 196 firms in 1936 and to 25 firms in the first three months of 1937.

Mr. Kelly

Has the right hon. Gentleman the figures of those employed on the two-shift system by the particular firm?

Sir J. Simon

I have not the information before me, but, in case the hon. Gentleman would like to know, I will communicate with him.

Were the workpeople consulted in all cases?

Yes, Sir, under the Act they have to be consulted.
