HC Deb 08 April 1937 vol 322 cc324-5
12 and 13. Mr. Short

asked the Minister of Labour (1) whether, having regard to the increased cost of food and materials, it is proposed to increase the benefits of the unemployed;

(2) whether, having regard to the increased cost of food and materials, the unemployment Assistance Board is considering increasing the allowances of those who come within their jurisdiction?

27. Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been directed to the recent increases in the cost of foodstuffs and other necessaries, and the relation of such increases to the standard of living of unemployed persons; and whether he has any statement to make thereon?

Mr. E. Brown

I do not consider that any circumstances have arisen which would justify the action necessary for increasing the rates of unemployment benefit and the basic rates of unemployment assistance.
