HC Deb 29 October 1936 vol 316 cc9-10
15. Mr. THORNE

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he can give the total amount of contracts, stating the kinds of works, that have been given out by the Admiralty, War Office, and Air Force; and the names of the firms in the following districts that have received such contracts: Clyde, Tyne, Barrow, Birkenhead, South Coast, London, and Belfast for the financial year ending 1937?

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREAURY (Mr. W. S. Morrison)

The total value of the orders placed by the Defence Departments since the beginning of the financial year up to 30th September last is approximately £83,000,000, but a considerable proportion of this total will not fall due for payment in the current financial year. It is not possible without undue labour to give the detailed particulars as to the allocation of contracts asked for. But the total value of orders placed by the Defence Departments in the current financial year up to 30th September, in areas suffering from severe and prolonged unemployment, including the Special Areas, is approximately £19,000,000.
