HC Deb 17 November 1936 vol 317 c1490
24. Mr. MORGAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade the percentage of new shipping under construction in Great Britain represented by oil tankers; and whether he can give any estimate as to the amount of direct and indirect employment involved?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

According to the returns published by Lloyd's Register of Shipping, oil tankers represented about 22 per cent. of the gross tonnage of mercantile vessels under construction in Great Britain and Ireland at the end of September, 1936. I regret that no accurate information is available as to the amount of labour involved.
