HC Deb 17 November 1936 vol 317 c1494
34. Major-General Sir ALFRED KNOX

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps it is possible for furniture exporters from this country to take to procure the reduction of the Canadian import duty of 18 per cent. ad valorem and the South African duty of 25 per cent. ad valorem on their products?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

The duty on furniture imported into Canada from the United Kingdom is under consideration in the present trade discussions with the Canadian Government. The duty on furniture imported into the Union of South Africa will be considered when trade negotiations with the Union Government take place.

Sir A. KNOX

Will the right hon. Gentleman use all his efforts in order to get this highly unsatisfactory arrangement changed?
