HC Deb 16 November 1936 vol 317 c1327
45. Mr. HALL-CAINE

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the recent appointment of a Minister for the Coordination of Defence, he will now consider making arrangements to change the title of the Secretary of State for War with a view to indicating that the responsibilities of the latter are limited to the control of His Majesty's Army, and to do away with the unfavourable impression which is created in certain foreign quarters by the presence in the Cabinet of a Secretary of State for War?

The PRIME MINISTER

No, Sir. I do not accept the suggestion contained in the last part of the question. My right hon. Friend's title is no different from that of ministers holding equivalent posts in many foreign countries, and no misunderstanding exists, I think, as to the extent of his province. Such a change would, moreover, involve legislation.
