HC Deb 10 November 1936 vol 317 c677
26. Captain MACNAMARA

asked the Secretary of State for War how much it would cost to provide suppers daily for soldiers; and when it is proposed to provide a daily evening meal for soldiers as well as officers?

Mr. COOPER

Officers and other ranks receive the same ration. To increase this ration to provide an evening meal for other ranks of the Regular Army would cost £436,000, and to extend the same ration to officers would involve a further £44,000. I may add that a similar extension to the Territorial Army would cost £16,000 for other ranks and £2,000 for officers. The whole matter is at present under examination.

Miss WILKINSON

May I ask how much the War Office would save if it took off their mid-day meal as well?

Mr.PETHERICK

Is it not the case that the Army is extremely well fed at the present time?
