HC Deb 10 November 1936 vol 317 cc666-7
10. Mr. HALL-CAINE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the fact that an adverse visible balance of trade approximating to £350,000,000 may be expected for the current year, he has any information to show whether the other items making up the country's balance of payments will be sufficient to avert a deficit; and, if not, whether any action is contemplated to remedy the situation?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I regret that the desired information is not available, as it is not practicable to furnish, for periods other than a calendar year, an estimate of the invisible items entering into the balance of payments.

Sir J. NALL

In view of the very adverse balances with several other countries, why have the Department not pressed more vigorously for further trade agreements?
