HC Deb 09 November 1936 vol 317 cc507-8
75. Mr. BENJAMIN SMITH

asked the Home Secretary the number of summonses issued, and the number of con- victions secured, against the drivers of taximeter-cabs for each year since the operation of the London Traffic (Unhired Cabs) Regulations?

Mr. LLOYD

As the answer includes a number of figures, with the hon. Member's permission I will circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

The London Traffic (Unhired Cabs) Regulations which came into force on 16th August, 1927, have since been superseded by Part VI of the London Traffic (Miscellaneous Provisions) Consolidation Provisional Regulations, 1934. The numbers of summonses issued under these Regulations are as follow:—

Year Number of Summonses.
1927 219
1928 438
1929 115
1930 233
1931 315
1932 379
1933 828
1934 669
1935 845
1936 (to 30th September) 732

In 1935, there were 760 convictions and 68 cases where the offence was proved and dealt with under the Probation of Offenders Act. The corresponding figures for the first nine months of 1936 are 643 and 63. I regret that corresponding figures are not available for the years before 1935.
