HC Deb 21 May 1936 vol 312 cc1370-1
73. Mr. MANDER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air the amount of British money paid to Italy on account of the Imperial Airways route to Africa and Australia while passing through that country since the imposition of sanctions in the Italo-Abyssinian dispute?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for AIR (Sir Philip Sassoon)

I regret that the information requested is not available. The only payments involved are those which are normally incidental to the use of an air route, and these are entirely a matter for the company itself.

Mr. MANDER

Have these payments continued since the imposition of sanctions?

Sir P. SASSOON

Yes, Sir, but they are only charges incurred in connection with housing and landing fees and have nothing to do with the export of munitions or the giving of credit to Italy.
