HC Deb 20 May 1936 vol 312 c1188
41. Mr. LYONS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air whether final approval has been given to the recommendation of a site in Essex as an airport for London; whether he will state the size and details of the land selected; whether, and when, it is proposed to commence work thereupon; and whether any other additional site is to be considered in the immediate future?

Sir P. SASSOON

As regards the first and second parts of the question, an inspection of the site was carried out by the Air Ministry at an earlier stage, but no formal application for approval has yet been made by the Court of Common Council, and precise information as to the size and details of the actual area at Fairlop which it is proposed to use is not therefore available at present. As regards the third part of the question, I have no information as to the probable date when work may commence, and as regards the last part my Noble Friend has not been asked to approve any additional sites.

Mr. LYONS

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what are the transport facilities between the site in question and Central London?

Sir P. SASSOON

I am afraid I cannot give that information, because a decision has not yet been taken. That is one of the matters to be taken into consideration.
