HC Deb 18 May 1936 vol 312 c818
18. Mr. EDE

asked the Minister of Agriculture the acreage of allotments in the county borough of South Shields; and how much of that acreage is the property of the corporation?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Mr. Elliot)

The total acreage of allotments in South Shields was returned by the borough council at the end of last year as 103 acres, exclusive of any railway allotments, the figures of which are only available for the country as a whole. At the date of the return no land was owned by the council for allotments purposes, but an area of 17 acres belonging to the council was being used temporarily for allotments. I understand, however, that approximately 11 acres of land has recently been purchased by the council for permanent allotments.
