HC Deb 13 May 1936 vol 312 c354
1. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether there has been any alteration in the situation in China since he made his last statement; and will he give particulars?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Baldwin)

Except for the situation in regard to smuggling and tariffs in North China, with which I dealt on Monday last, when answering a question put by my hon. Friend the Member for Bury (Mr. Chorlton), the position has not materially changed since the statement made by my noble Friend the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs on 21st April in reply to the hon. Member for Gower (Mr. D. Grenfell).

Mr. DAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether a further report is expected? Are they received regularly?

The PRIME MINISTER

I do not know.

Mr. LOUIS SMITH

Will my right hon. Friend cause a communication to be sent to our trading representatives in China to ask whether, in their opinion, any further steps could be taken to improve the trading relationships between this country and China?

The PRIME MINISTER

I will certainly mention that to my right hon. Friend on his return.
