HC Deb 13 May 1936 vol 312 cc377-8
45. Mr. MANDER

asked the Prime Minister, whether, in order to demonstrate the willingness of this country collectively to play its part in the suppression of aggression, he will consider the advisability of making a special recruiting appeal to the people of this country to join a military organisation to be used solely as part of the collective system for the maintenance of world order through the League of Nations and whom it would be illegal to employ for any other purpose?

The PRIME MINISTER

The answer is in the negative.

Mr. MANDER

Does the Prime Minister not think this would be a good way to test the sincerity of the supporters of the collective system and their willingness to take all risks in its defence?

The PRIME MINISTER

If I may say so, it is one of the less fruitful suggestions.

Mr. THURTLE

Is the right hon. Gentleman thinking of issuing any special recruiting appeal, and if so, will he issue an appeal to the bellicose Members of this House to join up?
