HC Deb 12 May 1936 vol 312 cc197-8
41. Mr. W. JOSEPH STEWART

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will amend the Unemployment Insurance Act so that disabled workmen who are in receipt of light rate compensation may have the same privileges as disabled ex-service men who are in receipt of a disability pension, namely, that they need only prove the payment of 10 contributions instead of 30 in respect of the two years immediately preceding the date of the claiming for benefit?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Mr. Ernest Brown)

No, Sir; I could not undertake to introduce legislation for this purpose.

Mr. STEWART

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that many workmen who, through injury, are prevented from following their employment are penalised in regard to the number of stamps required, namely 30, for the two years immediately preceding their claim for benefit?

Mr. BROWN

I could not accept that statement of the position.
