HC Deb 07 May 1936 vol 311 cc1877-8
60. Mr. LYONS

asked the Minister of Transport when, approximately, work will commence on the reconstruction of the London and North Eastern Railway station at Leicester?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

The reconstruction of Leicester station is not included in the works scheduled in the Railways (Agreement) Act.

Mr. LYONS

Is it not a fact that a condition of the guarantee given last year to the railway companies was that certain improvements should be made; and is it not the case that this station, which is no longer in keeping with the city of Leicester, should be improved in pursuance of that undertaking?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

My hon. and learned Friend is under a misapprehension. There was a schedule of agreed works, but this is not one of them.

Mr. LYONS

While I accept the fact as the Minister has stated it, may I ask him to bring to the notice of the railway company concerned the necessity of providing a better station, in order to replace the present station, which is no longer in keeping with the needs of the city and is in many ways obsolete?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I shall convey my hon. and learned Friend's suggestion to the proper quarter.
