17. Miss WARD

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty the number of yards receiving Admiralty orders on the Tyne and Clyde, respectively, in the years 1914 and 1935?

Lord STANLEY

The number of yards receiving Admiralty orders for hulls in the districts referred to is as follows:

Tyne. Clyde.
1914 Programme 2 3
1935 Programme 2 5

The figures for 1914 are based on the original building programme for that year, that is, excluding the vessels of the emergency War programme ordered within the financial year 1914.

Miss WARD

In view of the fact that the allocation of Admiralty orders is to some extent on the basis of building yards available, will the Noble Lord in future undertake to see that the Tyne gets the advantages of rationalisation instead of all the disadvantages?

Lord STANLEY

I think, if the hon. Member will look at the figures over a considerable period, she will find that the balance has been very fairly held. If questions are asked dealing only with small comparative periods, it is likely to lead to answers which lead in turn to deceptive conclusions.

Viscountess ASTOR

Does not the Noble Lord think the private yards have their full quota, considering that it is a national programme, and we have national dockyards?
