HC Deb 05 May 1936 vol 311 c1524
49. Marquess of TITCHFIELD

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any information about the annual expenditure on lipstick, face powder, and other cosmetics; and whether he has considered these articles as a possible source of revenue?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

As regards the first part of the question, I have no information which would enable me to distinguish the annual expenditure upon the articles named. As regards the second part, imported cosmetics are already taxed under the tariff, but as at present advised I am not prepared to propose the imposition of an Excise Duty on home products.
