HC Deb 05 May 1936 vol 311 c1510
27. Mr. HANNAH

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware of the extensive destruction of ancient buildings now going on in Scotland; and whether he will advise local authorities, wherever possible, to recondition old houses instead of building less substantial new ones?

Sir G. COLLINS

No, Sir. I am not aware that extensive destruction of ancient buildings is taking place in Scotland, but if my hon. Friend will supply me with particulars of any cases which he has in view I shall be happy to have them investigated. I am sending the hon. Member a copy of a circular issued on the passing of the Housing Act last year in which local authorities were specifically reminded of the importance of preserving existing works of architectural, historical and artistic interest. Arrangements have also been made for consultation between my Department and the Office of Works in the case of orders submitted by local authorities for confirmation which involve the demolition of property under the Housing Acts.
