asked the Secretary for Mines the number of persons employed below ground and above ground, respectively, in the mines of Great Britain during the years 1934 and 1935?

The average numbers of persons employed at mines under the Coal Mines Act, 1911, in Great Britain during the year 1934 were 624,437 below ground and 173,262 above ground. The corresponding figures for the year 1935 were 609,531 and 171,186 respectively.
