HC Deb 23 March 1936 vol 310 c867
31. Dr. LEACH (for Mr. MAGNAY)

asked the Postmaster-General whether the postal, telegraph and telephone facilities available to the public have been in any way affected in the north-eastern district of England, in view of the fact that the new regional organisation of the Post Office has been brought into operation in that district; and is any alteration involved in the status of the postmaster-surveyor of Newcastle in regard to the city of Newcastle itself?

Sir W. WOMERSLEY

The regional organisation which has been experimentally introduced in the north-eastern district of England has not in any way affected the facilities offered to the public, whether postal, telegraph or telephone. It is, however, confidently hoped that the new organisation will result in a gradual improvement in those facilities. No alteration is intended, for the time being, at any rate, in the status of the postmaster-surveyor of Newcastle in regard to the city of Newcastle itself, save that the telephone manager at Newcastle, who was previously subordinate to him, has been given independent standing.
