HC Deb 17 March 1936 vol 310 c236
74. Lieut. - Commander FLETCHER

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that 30 years ago certain German officers cut off the head of an African chief named Mkwawa and sent the skull to Europe, and that the Treaty of Versailles provided for the handing over of the skull to His Majesty's Government, within six months, for restoration to Tanganyika; whether this part of the Treaty of Versailles has been carried out; and, if not, what steps does he propose to take to secure the restoration of the skull to Tanganyika?

Mr. J. H. THOMAS

In spite of repeated investigations on the part of the German Government, the present whereabouts of this relic has not been traced. I do not propose to pursue the matter further.
