13. Mr. DAVIDSON

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total cost of able-bodied relief in Scotland for the years 1931 and 1935, respectively?

The amount of relief paid by local authorities in Scotland in the year ended 15th May, 1931, to destitute able-bodied unemployed persons, was £653,107, The amount for the year ended 15th May, 1935, was £2,599,275, of which £380,000 has been met out of the grant paid to local authorities under the Unemployment Assistance (Temporary Provisions) (No. 2) Act, 1935.
