HC Deb 16 March 1936 vol 310 cc29-30
63. Mr. MAXTON

asked the Minister of Health how many reports on the state of overcrowding in England and Wales he has now received; what percentage of the total number is still to come; and whether he will publish the facts now in his hands?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE

Local authorities are required to submit the results of their surveys by 1st June. Up to the present my right hon. Friend has received reports from 59 authorities out of a total of 1,559. These reports cover 202,801 dwellings of which 6,099 are overcrowded I will send the hon. Member the particulars relating to each authority.

Mr. THORNE

Is it not a fact that all the surveys that have gone on in England should have been in the office of the hon. Gentleman?

Mr. MAXTON

Is the hon. Gentleman satisfied with having received only 59 out of some thousands; is he satisfied with that figure?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE

Oh, yes, the progress is very substantial, and we have no reason to anticipate any default.
