Mr. RITSONasked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that the publication entitled "India in 1933–34," authorised by the Secretary of State for India, contains attacks on the integrity and honesty of public men of repute; on what evidence these attacks are based; and whether the bias against the Congress contained in the introductory chapter and appearing in various parts of the book has the approval of the Secretary of State?
§ Mr. BUTLER"India in 1933–34" was published under the authority and the general approval of the Secretary of State, but as stated in the preface this approval does not necessarily extend to every particular expression of opinion in the book, which is of a descriptive character. So far as it includes statements of fact, I am not aware that any inaccuracy is suggested, but it deals with matters of public interest upon which varied opinions may legitimately be held.
