HC Deb 10 March 1936 vol 309 c1952
25. Mr. BARCLAY-HARVEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is yet in a position to make any statement regarding the proposed conference between Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on Empire shipping in the Pacific, and particularly whether consideration will be given to providing British ships which are at least as up to date as the American ships on the trans-Pacific route?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I have been informed that His Majesty's Governments in the Dominions particularly concerned have had under consideration the action which they might take to deal with the position of British Lines in the Pacific in competition with the Matson Line. An opportunity will occur shortly for a discussion of the matter. With regard to the last part of the question, the Governments concerned will no doubt consider all possible methods of meeting the situation.

Mr. PALING

Does this foreshadow another subsidy for shipping?
