HC Deb 10 March 1936 vol 309 cc1954-5
34. Mr. SORENSEN

asked the Secretary of State for War how many extra chaplains will be engaged in order to make effective the proposed extension of our military defence?

Mr. COOPER

I cannot at this stage do more than assure the hon. Member that this question, among others arising out of the defence proposals, will be borne in mind. The Estimates for 1936 include provision for four additional chaplains.

Mr. SORENSEN

May I take it that the right hon. Gentleman considers it is necessary to have more chaplains to make the fighting forces effective?

Mr. BARR

Will the right hon. Gentleman take steps to see that all these chaplains are good Presbyterians

Mr. THURTLE

May we take it that the Secretary of State for War is going to ensure that these new chaplains emphasise the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount?
