HC Deb 09 March 1936 vol 309 cc1787-8
36. Mr. THORNE

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many times the Milk Marketing Board have summoned farmers for the recovery of the milk levies; and whether the three cows sold by auction at Chester on Wednesday, 4th March, were sufficient to cover the debt claimed?

Mr. ELLIOT

I am informed by the Milk Marketing Board that they have taken proceedings since the commencement of the scheme in July, 1933, for the recovery of unpaid contributions in 2,183 cases. With regard to the second part of the question, I understand that the amount received did not cover the amount of the debt.

Mr. THORNE

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that these three cows were sold for 15s.? Is not this a wicked way of depriving a farmer of his livelihood?

Mr. ELLIOT

I do not think that the hon. Member puts a fair interpretation on the matter.
