HC Deb 09 March 1936 vol 309 c1799
66. Mr. DOBBIE

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the hardships imposed on day-to-day men employed by the London Midland and Scottish Railway Company at Holyhead and who are covered by the State unemployment insurance scheme, arising out of the umpire's decisions 5,153 and 5,154 of April, 1934, which treats employment beginning on a Sunday night as employment on a Monday, with the result that the men in question who are paid 4s. ld., less 2s. deduction for insurance, for the night shift are refused unemployment benefit in respect of the Monday; and whether, having regard to the opinion expressed by the court of referees that this system discourages the men from seeking work of this description, he will consider the possibility of amending the night-shift regulations provided in the Unemployment Act in order to remove the anomaly?

Lieut.-Colonel MUIRHEAD

I am having inquiries made, and will communicate with the hon. Member.
