§ 20. Mr. BOOTHBYasked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that the prices of beef and of oats remain at unremunerative levels; and whether he will take immediate and vigorous action to remedy the condition of agriculture in the North and West?
§ Mr. ELLIOTSince the beginning of the year the average returns per live cwt., including subsidy, received by producers in England and Wales for fat cattle of first and second quality have been higher than during the corresponding periods of the last three years. The average price of oats in England and Wales during the five months September to January, 1935–36 was, with the exception of the year 1934–35, the highest for the last four years during the corresponding period. As regards the last part of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to statements of Government policy which have been made from time to time.
§ Mr. BOOTHBYIs it not a fact that both in the North of England and Scotland these prices have remained at un-remunerative levels for two or three years, and that arable stock farming is no longer an economic proposition? How much longer have we to wait before action is taken in the matter?
§ Mr. ELLIOTAs my hon. Friend will see from the answer, these prices have been showing an upward tendency.
§ Mr. BOOTHBYNot in Scotland.
§ Mr. ELLIOTIf the hon. Member will put a question to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland he will receive information.
