Mr. CREECH JONESasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the number of persons recruited since 1929 for the Foreign and Diplomatic and the Consular Services, respectively, and the number of persons in each class who received their education in the public elementary and secondary schools?
§ Viscount CRANBORNEThe total number of recruits for the Foreign Office and Diplomatic Service in the years 1929 to 1935 inclusive was 51, and for the Consular Service 78. I have no information that any of these gentlemen were educated at public elementary schools. As regards secondary schools, one of the recruits to the Foreign Office and Diplomatic Service was educated at a school receiving a grant from the Board of Education, and of the recruits to the Consular Service 26 were educated at such schools in England and Wales and one in Scotland. In addition, two recruits to the Foreign Office and Diplomatic Service were educated in the Dominions, and of the recruits to the Consular Service two were educated in Ireland and two abroad.
