HC Deb 02 March 1936 vol 309 cc995-6
49. Mr. GARRO-JONES

asked the Prime Minister whether, having regard to the fact that two out of the three Cabinet Ministers responsible for the Fighting Services are Peers, he can undertake that any Minister appointed to co-ordinate defence will be a Member of this House?

The PRIME MINISTER

I can at present add nothing to the statement which I made on Thursday last.

Mr. ATTLEE

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that there is a very strong opinion among Members of the House, not only on these benches but elsewhere, that the Minister in question should be in the Commons House?

The PRIME MINISTER

It is my duty to realise these things, and I do not think I am behindhand as a rule.

Mr. THORNE

Is t here any truth in the statement that. a Member of the other House has already been appointed?

The PRIME MINISTER

No appointment has been made.
