HC Deb 29 June 1936 vol 314 cc16-7
34. Major DORMAN-SMITH

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether his attention has been directed to the increased duty on cider imposed by the Irish Free State; whether he has any information as to the effect of this increase upon the cider-making industry in this country; and what action he proposes to take in the matter?

Dr. BURGIN

Yes, Sir; while I appreciate that the increased duty is likely to have a detrimental effect on the trade in cider to the Irish Free State, which amounted to £12,000 in 1934, I do not think the matter is one in which any useful action can be taken at the present time.
