HC Deb 23 June 1936 vol 313 cc1588-9
47. Mr. T. HENDERSON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the amount of taxation per head of the population in the United Kingdom for the years 1929–30 and 1936–37; and the amount of revenue raised in these years by means of direct and indirect taxation?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Taxation per head in 1929–30 was £14 15s. 10d., and in 1936–37 is estimated at £16 3s. 7d. Direct taxation in 1929–30 was £434,166,000, and indirect £242,615,000. For 1936–37, direct taxation is estimated at £469,500,000, and indirect at £312,525,000. I should add that the alteration in our fiscal system since 1929–30 would render any comparisons with later periods altogether misleading.

Mr. MABANE

If the comparison were made with 1913–14, would it not show that the proportion of direct to indirect taxation was much heavier?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I should require notice of that question.
