§ 47. Mr. T. HENDERSONasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the amount of taxation per head of the population in the United Kingdom for the years 1929–30 and 1936–37; and the amount of revenue raised in these years by means of direct and indirect taxation?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINTaxation per head in 1929–30 was £14 15s. 10d., and in 1936–37 is estimated at £16 3s. 7d. Direct taxation in 1929–30 was £434,166,000, and indirect £242,615,000. For 1936–37, direct taxation is estimated at £469,500,000, and indirect at £312,525,000. I should add that the alteration in our fiscal system since 1929–30 would render any comparisons with later periods altogether misleading.
§ Mr. MABANEIf the comparison were made with 1913–14, would it not show that 1589 the proportion of direct to indirect taxation was much heavier?
